Many people are increasingly becoming cautious of what they eat, and often they would rather consume “whole foods.” The concept of whole food is a fairly new concept to most of us. Whole foods are foods from plants that have undergone no artificial processing and refining or have very minimal artificial processing. This concept of whole foods first appeared in 1946 in a quarterly magazine, named “The Farmer,” and it was F. Newman Turner, a contributor to that magazine, who first expounded on the concept of “whole foods” as “mature produce of natural organic farms that did not undergo chemical dressing.”

Some examples of whole foods include whole grains, fruits without preservatives, vegetables, legumes, and even Jiaogulan which is a natural food supplement that could be consumed either in tea, capsule, or many other forms. As the desire for whole foods grew among American consumers and Europeans various whole foods markets were established in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Is Jiaogulan Whole Food?

Jiaogulan can be categorized as whole food if its cultivation and processing do not include artificial processing. The simple procedures on how Jiaogulan is planted along the hilly sides of Northern Thailand, for example, would surely shed light on this inquiry. In Chiangmai, Thailand, Jiaogulan seedlings are simply soaked in warm water for 24 hours during the germination process, and then, the germinating seedlings are transferred to pots that contain an organic mix. Afterwards, the budding plants are transplanted into the fertile farmlands along the sloping hills of Chiangmai. These budding plants then grow without the need for synthetic fertilizers, because Jiaogulan vines need not much tending to grow.

Why is Jiaogulan Considered the Best Whole Food?

The claim that Jiaogulan is the best whole food is not without basis, though this claim needs further scientific validation. However, there seems to be a lack of Western scientific studies on Jiaogulan, since most scientific studies done on Jiaogulan were conducted by Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean scientists, Moreover, Western Scientific Institutions are not inclined to scientifically study Jiaogulan, and they tend to dismiss the studies done by their Eastern counterparts as flawed.

It would seem impossible likewise to ask scientific financing for prospective studies on Jiaogulan from huge pharmaceutical companies, for if the claims on the healthful benefits of Jiaogulan are true, these huge pharmaceutical companies would definitely run out of business, because Jiaogulan is hailed as the “Herb of Immortality” and maybe a “Cure-for-all.”

Some healthful benefits of Jiaogulan include the following:

  • It is a powerful antioxidant since it is known to increase the expression of the powerful cellular enzyme called superoxide dismutase(SOD).
  • It is a powerful adaptogen—a term that is not yet fully accepted by western medicine. Adaptogens are substances that occasion optimal balance or homeostasis within the body.
  • It stimulates the continuous release of nitric oxide—a chemical compound that was proclaimed the “Molecule of the Year” in 1992—and was considered as the cardiovascular signaling molecule.
  • It is ideal for the prevention and treatment of diabetes because it maintains the blood serum sugar level on its normal level.
  • It is a known treatment for the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Jiaogulan is also used to treat chronic bronchitis, cough, poor appetite, ongoing stomach pain, insomnia, constipation, ulcers, inflammation, and stress. Upon careful consideration of the abovementioned healthful benefits of Jiaogulan, you could readily gauge if Jiaogulan would indeed be the best whole food in the world.
